Petition to Stop the Busking Bans in Kensington and Chelsea

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea are proposing to introduce a Public Spaces Protection Order which means that buskers could be subjected to a fine of up to £1000.

Buskers have entertained the public on Portobello Road, in the South Kensington museum district and outside Harrods for many years, and these are considered iconic locations for street performers.

The Musicians’ Union (MU) is concerned by the punitive measures that The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea want to introduce to curb this vital stream of revenue for musicians.

Busking can provide the first stepping stones into a long and varied musical career and has been the starting point for some of the UK’s biggest artists. It is a vital part of our country’s rich musical history and we urge the borough to actively engage in constructive dialogue to help resolve the issues.

Today the UK Government has responded to the Misogyny in Music Report and rejected recommendations that would help protect and support women in the music industry from harassment and discrimination, despite hearing strong evidence from women, experts and organisations in the sector.

Black Lives in Music Launch YourSafetyYourSay Survey on Bullying and Harassment in the Music Industry

The survey will inform government legislation, the work of the new Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority and the wider music industry. It will also be used to support BLiM’s forthcoming Anti Racist Code of Conduct. Members are encouraged to share their experiences.

Representing Our Scottish Members at STUC Congress 2024

This week we attended the annual Scottish Trades Union Congress with MU Delegates Christine Cooper and Ben Lunn, who discussed the importance of music education, community arts in Scotland and establishing a Music Expo Office for the country. All three of our motions were passed unanimously.
